Welcome!

I'm Dr. Zheila Ommani.

I am so glad you’ve taken the first steps toward seeking support to make positive changes in your life or your family’s life! My passion lies in working with children, adolescents, young adults, and families, helping them set and achieve goals for greater internal and life satisfaction. I approach therapy with a focus on strengths, accomplishments, and needs, rather than perceived failures. Together, we will celebrate past successes and develop strength-based strategies to rebuild confidence and achieve your goals.

Having worked extensively with individuals across New York, Washington, D.C., and especially California, I understand the diverse challenges faced by families and individuals. Whether dealing with academic struggles, behavioral issues, substance use, or mental health concerns, I believe in the innate desire to improve and the effort people already put into their lives. My role is to help navigate the complex path to achieving your goals.

How I Can Help

In our sessions, you can expect a safe and open atmosphere where you will experience acceptance and empathetic listening, and an earnest desire to learn about who you or your child are as people, what brought you into my care, as well as what elements of your past and present that you feel currently impact you today. I provide practical tools and strategies that are tailored to address your unique concerns and needs for individual clients, or the needs of the family system as a whole for child and family clients.

No two people are the same, and as such, I ensure that your treatment is specifically customized to meet your personal and treatment goals. My approach is grounded in humanistic therapy paired with evidence-based practices including cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness, motivational interviewing techniques, and/or family systems ecological theory or structural family therapy, where it applies with children and families. These methods and philosophies are utilized in a strength-based approach and are designed to empower you to gain insight and clarity into how to solve your own problems, build resilience, and achieve meaningful and long-lasting change in areas of need that you identify.

Together, we will focus on overcoming commonly identified issues such as anxiety or depression, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, substance use, or issues such as becoming more adept socially and interpersonally, improving self-esteem, attachment-related issues, processing and moving beyond trauma experiences, and developing coping, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation skills that will enhance your emotional well-being and allow you to improve your overall mental health, strengthen your relationships, and develop skill sets that can be utilized far into the future after our work has completed.

Based on your strengths and accomplishments, we will highlight past successes and craft strength-based plans to help you regain confidence and achieve your desired improvements. For students and working people, I also assist in developing academic and occupational strategies to overcome procrastination and improve efficiency.

Professional Background

My diverse experiences and education have fueled my passion for supporting others.

Here’s a glimpse into how my background equips me to support you effectively on your journey.

How I Got Here

My path to becoming a therapist began with witnessing my older sibling's mental health struggles when I was a child and teenager. Watching various clinicians over the years allowed me to see what worked, but more importantly, what didn't work for my family, and inspired me to want to contribute to the breadth and flexibility the psychological field must have as it expands. Over the years, I have worked in various clinical settings, including private hospitals, residential and day treatment centers, community mental health clinics, child welfare agencies, non-profit organizations, in-home therapy with previously adjudicated youth, as well as in various research positions in both New York and California. These experiences have profoundly influenced my approach and solidified my commitment to focusing on the strengths I see in each person, rather than simply focusing on their weaknesses or needs.

Education & Training

I hold a doctoral degree in psychology from the University of La Verne, where I specialized in the treatment of children and adolescents, in addition to neuropsychological and psychoeducational assessment. Additionally, I have completed training in mindfulness, DBT, structural family therapy, motivational interviewing, movement/dance therapy, and play therapy, which further enhanced my expertise in assisting adult, adolescent, and child clients to improve positive outlooks on their futures, feel greater self-worth, and create more mental flexibility in how they approach events and challenges in their lives.
