What Is ADHD?

ADHD is talked about a lot these days, but the people doing the talking aren’t always the most knowledgeable. It’s important to hear form others who have the condition and learn fromtheir experiences, but it’s also essential to receive an accurate diagnosis from a professional who can help you better understand ADHD and how it impacts your life. Those who are diagnosed with ADHD struggle with managing their executive functions. Things like concentration, task prioritization, and memory can all be impacted by this neurodevelopmental difference. ADHD usually presents as inattentive, hyperactive, or combined. Understanding how your experience with ADHD affects you makes a big difference in how you are able to experience daily life and manage tasks, schedules, and other life details.

What Are the Main ADHD Symptoms?

ADHD can impact people in a variety of ways. Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Forgetting details when completing tasks.
  • Struggling to concentrate for long periods, especially on topics you’re uninterested in.
  • Misplacing things.
  • Forgetting commitments.
  • Failing to complete tasks you start.
  • Feeing restless or fidgeting.
  • Having a tough time keeping things organized.
  • Being impatient.
  • Engaging in dangerous or risky behaviors.
  • Interrupting people or struggling to wait your turn.
  • Experiencing frequent mood swings.

How Is ADHD Assessment Performed?

The assessment process at Aspire Therapy Center starts with a complimentary consultation phone call. During this appointment, you’ll be able to ask any questions you have about the process, and your therapist may have questions to ask you as well. After the consultation, you’ll schedule an intake session. During this appointment, the assessment psychologist asks a variety of questions, goes through your medical and therapy history, has you fill out rating scales to explore your symptom severity, and performs other assessments to learn more about your experience with ADHD. After this intake appointment, your therapist will put together a comprehensive testing battery that may include tests of intelligence, aptitude, concentration, and other factors that indicate ADHD. After you complete the testing battery, the psychologist will carefully review and compile all the results before providing you a final report that includes a diagnosis, answers to any specific referral questions, and recommendations for resources and support. You’ll discuss this report in a final session.
