Therapy, Assessment, or Coaching?
Which one is right for me?

When you contact our office, we will help you make that determination based on your goals. If you are seeking a clear treatment plan, need help with accommodations, or want to better clarify what’s holding you back, Assessment is the way to go.

Therapy sessions are best for sorting out more complex goals that could be heavily influenced by your feelings.

Coaching is ideal if you have a clear goal and want to achieve it post-haste.

How long do appointments last?

Therapy sessions typically last 45-50 minutes. A few of our clinicians offer longer sessions for a more immersive experience. Couples sessions can be extended to 90 minutes.

Assessment appointments vary in length, depending upon how quickly findings are needed. Typically, 2-3 hours per appointment, but for those visiting from out of town, or others looking for expedited results, we can schedule for the entire day.

How often do I have to come into the office?

Therapy and Coaching sessions are typically scheduled weekly for at least 6 sessions to become comfortable with your therapist, and to clearly establish your goals. Thereafter, session frequency will be something you decide along with your clinician.

For those with one clear goal or numerous goals, weekly sessions are advised. Bi-weekly sessions are more appropriate for individuals using therapy for greater self-understanding and discovery.

Established clients who have met their immediate therapy goals can schedule maintenance sessions on an as-needed basis.

Do you accept insurance?

We are in-network providers with Aetna. Some of our clinicians accept Cigna.

If you have a PPO, we are happy to provide you with a monthly superbill to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

Why don’t you accept my insurance?

It’s a matter of your personal privacy! Insurance does not cover therapy for prevention or self-improvement. Clinicians must diagnose clients and carefully document treatment, only as it relates to that diagnosis.

This may result in your being identified by insurers as having a pre-existing mental health condition. Insurers may also limit or deny services entirely, if they do not deem a diagnosis to be serious enough to warrant treatment.

We strongly believe in the power of therapy and coaching as a means of self-improvement and as preventive medicine. We limit our work with insurers to protect you and to allow you to receive services directly tailored to your needs.

Do you offer video or phone sessions?

We offer video and phone sessions for California residents, but prefer to meet a client in-person prior to commencing distance sessions.

Are your offices handicap accessible?

Our office in Claremont is handicap accessible. Our office in South Pasadena is not, but we can arrange to see you at a satellite office that is handicap accessible.

What about diversity?

We pride ourselves in being a welcoming and inclusive center. Our clinicians are required to educate themselves about diverse populations relating to ethnicity, religion, sexual-orientation, and disability. We are LGBTQIA affirming and kink-friendly.

What is it like to be in therapy?

Therapy is a unique relationship. It’s the only safe-space where you can talk to someone else about your feelings without worrying about that person. Friends and family are great, but don’t necessarily give you the non-judgmental, no-strings-attached outlet that therapy provides.

You get to explore how you are feeling and take the next steps in determining how to navigate those feelings and act. Therapy provides the tools to make those changes through concrete exercises of reflection, as well as helping you gain insight into yourself.

Effective therapy will have highs and lows but is, ultimately, a place to clarify your thoughts, learn about yourself, and find new direction in your life.

If I arrive early for my appointment, what do I do?

South Pasadena and Claremont are both lovely towns.

Our South Pasadena office is located between the post-office and library. There’s an amazing sandwich shop with an outdoor garden cafe right down the street. If you schedule on a Thursday, you can wander around the farmer’s market in the afternoon. Or, if you would rather just hang out in our waiting room, we have a variety of reading material and refreshments.

Our Claremont location is just a block from the village with its many shops and eateries, and there’s a park just up the street. Feel free to come by early and enjoy the surroundings!

Coffee or tea?

Both.

While our clinicians vary in their tastes, we stock complimentary coffee and tea for our clients. We also have water and, sometimes, hot chocolate. Help yourself, and feel free to put in a request for your favorite. We enjoy making our clients feel at home!
